Welcome to my personal editorial column. Here, I share intimate thoughts on fashion, Indian style culture, seasonal reflections, and personal style discoveries. A Beautiful Masterclass:
Soumya Smruti Sahoo style journal KapdeWali

Welcome to the very first volume of my personal style journal. When we launched KapdeWali, the goal was never to simply tell you what to buy. The market is already saturated with shopping catalogues. The goal was to create a space where we could talk intimately about why we wear what we wear. Fashion is deeply psychological, especially for the Indian woman navigating the complex intersection of cultural expectations and modern ambitions.

I have always believed that looking expensive has absolutely nothing to do with spending more. True elegance is found in how you curate your life and the intentionality with which you dress. Whether you are building a seasonal capsule wardrobe or selecting the perfect sequin saree, the desire is to feel complete.

Seasonal Reflections: The Monsoon Wardrobe Shift

As May draws to a close and we look toward the humidity of the Indian monsoon, our wardrobes must undergo a transformation. We are moving away from heavy silks and embracing the grace of breathable textiles.

Mulmul, light Chanderi, and pure linens become our daily armor. I have found myself repeatedly reaching for mid-calf hemlines and comfortable Kolhapuri flats that withstand the weather while maintaining sophistication.

Styling Notes: Reclaiming the Desk-to-Dinner Look

A desk-to-dinner outfit must respect the conservative boundaries of Indian corporate spaces while seamlessly shifting into an evening aesthetic. Recently, I have been styling slip dresses paired with structured, oversized blazers for exactly this purpose.

True wardrobe mastery—which we constantly explore in the KapdeWali Everyday Edit—is about recognizing the multifaceted nature of a single garment. This is the essence of smart spending, a philosophy celebrated by global authorities like Vogue India.

On Indian Fashion Culture: The Power of Heritage

There is a beautiful renaissance happening within Indian fashion right now. We are witnessing a powerful return to heritage textiles, driven not by mere nostalgia, but by a modern, intellectual demand for sustainability and authentic craftsmanship. Handloom sarees, once reserved strictly for past generations, are being joyfully reclaimed by young women for corporate events, weddings, and daily wear.

This shift is profound. It tells me that we are finally recognizing the inherent luxury of our own cultural aesthetics. We do not need to look westward to define elegance. The sculptural drape of a perfectly pleated Kanjeevaram, the intricate detail of authentic Chikankari, and the bold geometry of an Ikat dress — these are the unmistakable markers of a globally significant fashion identity.

From the Inbox: Reader Letters

Every week, I receive dozens of thoughtful emails from you. This dialogue is what fuels KapdeWali. This week, I want to address a question from a reader asking how to build a functional capsule wardrobe without losing a love for vibrant color.

The solution is simple: Build your capsule around three primary jewel tones that complement your skin, and use metallic accents—like dull gold or oxidised silver—as your true neutrals. This keeps your wardrobe versatile while remaining authentically Indian.

Our Editorial Manifesto

This journal is a record of evolution. My goal is to bridge the gap between high-fashion standards and the everyday realities of dressing in India. I write this for the woman who appreciates the history behind a textile, the technique behind a drape, and the confidence that comes from dressing with intention.
